Grant Awarded to Develop Training Program for Walker Healthcare Providers
The Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College Center for Research and Innovation Custom College recently received a grant to develop a custom staff training curriculum and business strategies program to assist a group of facilities providing a variety of health care services in Walker.  The $25,921 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Program grant was awarded to the CRICC by the Department of Employment and Economic Development. The Walker facilities include May Creek Lodge, Stille Havn Hus, Shingobee Island Lodge and Summit House which, as a group, provide a mixture of respite and residential care for chronic, persistently mentally ill and Alzheimer’s afflicted seniors as well as residential care for developmentally disabled adults. Regional Employer Support Network 
The Regional Employer Support Network will host a panel of financial planners and bankers discussing retirement benefit planning services and plan structures from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. September 6 at the Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College Center for Research and Innovation Custom College. The panel of experts will be discussing and a variety of retirement benefit plans and explaining how they differ. Panel members and presenters are Paul Welle and Jacquie Williamson, representing First National Bank of Bemidji; Eileen Bretschneider, representing Edward Jones; and David Moffett, representing Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.  Full RESN schedule and more information are online.   
 
Annual Fundraising – What Is It and How Does It Work? 
Join Deb McGregor-Pfleger as she presents information to help non-profits develop an annual fund raising plan and determining which elements will be most beneficial to your organization. This session is part of a new series of presentations that are free and open to the public (feel free to bring your own lunch).  All sessions will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 on the first Wednesday of the month beginning September 12Click here for more information and full schedule.

Waterfowl in Minnesota – a Historical Perspective”
Presenting will be Jeff Lawrence, Ph.D., group leader of the Wetland Wildlife Populations and Research Group, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Bemidji office. Minnesota’s wetlands provide habitat for more than 23 species of waterfowl, each with its own habitat needs, evidenced by their differing life histories. Lawrence will examine a few key species in Minnesota and how their populations have changed in response to man’s impact on the environment. These patterns can provide insight into what the future holds for waterfowl populations.”  Join Jeff from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, September 17. Online Professional Development Certificate in Human Resources
The Center for Research and Innovation Custom College will offer an on-line professional development non-credit certificate in Human Resources Management beginning Monday, September 17. The 12-week course is designed for professionals who are new to the human resources field or human resources assistants and staff who provide technical or administrative support. The interactive design of the program will help participants build a network of resources and people that will last long after the course is completed. Academy of LifelongLearning Launches Fall Series
Population growth, the next generation and learning through ethnic literacy are among the topics covered by this fall’s morning lecture series sponsored by the Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) of Bemidji State University. The first session, “Singapore:  Challenging Our Perceptions of Development” with Dr. Tom Beech, Associate Professor of Political Science at BSU will be held Tuesday, September 18 from 10-11:30am at the Center for Research and Innovation Custom College, located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North.  The 8-week series includes a tour of the energy efficient Biohaus at Concordia Language Villages on October 16 and a bus trip to the Plains Art Museum in Fargo on Tuesday, October 23 for a nominal fee. Open Enrollment Courses Offered at Northwest Technical College

MN OSHA Employee Right to Know Standard and the AWAIR Act

John O’Brien, MNSTAR Voluntary Protection Program coordinator, Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry/Workplace Safety Consultation Unit, Duluth will share information on these important standards on Wednesday, September 19 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. A $20 fee will be charged to cover the price of materials and lunch. His presentation will provide an overview of the training requirements, a variety of methods that trainers may use to meet these requirements and describe what resources are available for trainers to use in developing or improving their training programs. Those attending the session will receive a copy of the Minnesota OSHA Employee Right to Know and AWAIR standards and additional information on developing their own individual training programs. Computer Forensics Course Offered Online
In this 4 week online Training Session, individuals will learn the fundamental principles and concepts in computer forensics. The topics include: the differing data file structures, the procedure of discovering and preserving evidence, and methods of searching and retrieving evidence using software tools. Related legal procedures and reports are also discussed briefly.  Participants will conduct a minimum of 1 hands-on practice Case during the training session.  Once completed, this training session should allow a basic understanding of the process, policies, and software needs to conduct a computer forensics analysis. This course is approved for 45 POST Credits and begins September 24More information and registration is online.

“Adapting Natural Resource Management in Northern MN to a Changing Climate”
Climate is changing putting Minnesota’s ecological and natural resources at risk. The Bemidji Area Natural Resources Continuing Education Consortium has assembled a diverse group of speakers to share information about potential impacts and changes that may happen because of these changes.  The workshop is divided in to 2 sections.  In the morning, join us to learn of potential impacts and changes that may be dramatic and/or severe and to identify the challenges and opportunities that these changes/impacts present to resource managers.  The second half of the workshop will be spent developing strategies and tactics for natural resources manager in Northern MN to adapt management practices to a changing climate.  This includes managers from various levels and various agencies. This workshop is scheduled Wednesday, November 28 at the Northern Inn, Bemidji.  The draft agenda and registration forms are online.

Online Certificate in Technical Document Creation Offered
A new non-credit online Professional Development Certificate in Office Management – Technical Document Creation is being offered November 5-December 14. The main requirement of workplace writing is clarity and professional looking documents. Business documents and written communications should be direct, grammatically correct, and easy to read.

  • Identify the characteristics of business messages
  • Recognize and identify ways to minimize communication barriers
  • Identify the steps in planning/designing technical documents
  • Identify the role of communications in the workplace and daily life

Prerequisite for this course is to have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 2003 software and have the software available to complete assignments.  Registration form is online.
