Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Awards Funding to Center for Research and Innovation

Lueken’s Village Foods is one of three large grocery stores serving the greater Bemidji area.  Over the past three decades, the store has expanded considerably and now has two locations with 262 employees. The Center for Research and Innovation will deliver a training program that will help employees develop a perspective in future-oriented thinking with a deliberate, planned approach to growth. Project results include identifying and implementing business strategies that lead to a high performance culture, develop a market research methodology, and creating a streamlined approach to administrative process will decrease the overhead.  Full press release and photos of the grant signing are available online.

CRI Offers New Program in Project Management

A new three-day course in project management will be offered March 7, 14 and 21 by the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation.

Students will work in teams and are encouraged to use existing projects instead of instructor provided case studies. “This three day course will focus on the development of a project plan using processes sanctioned by the Project Management Institute.  Since the culmination of the class will be a draft project plan, students are encouraged to bring existing or planned projects from their workplace to class”.  
 
Teaching the course will be Michael Wellcome Associate Director, Center for Research and Innovation. In addition to project management his experience includes systems design, electronic commerce and organizational development. He is the project officer for the Northern Tier High Technology Corridor project and has over 10 years experience in designing, managing, and implementing projects.

Course fee is $425, including lunch and all materials, with a discount offered to any company sending 4 or more people to this course. More information and the registration form are available online.

News and Events from Regional Knowledge Clusters

Safety Professionals - Get Advice to Initiate a Safety Culture in your Organization
Presenting will be several human resources/safety team members from TEAM Industries, representing a variety of its locations. The presenters are Pete Keller, Audubon and Detroit Lakes, and Nichole Nater, Park Rapids and Baxter. Carri Pickett and Julie Olson from the TEAM corporate office in Bagley will also attend and participate in the question and answer segment of the program.

Safety cultures are among the most difficult safety initiatives to achieve, noted Nater. While compliance is necessary, a safety culture is also comprised of employee buy-in and empowerment, which typically results in improved compliance and a decrease in injury occurrences and severity. This session will be held at the Center for Research and Innovation on February 15.  A $20 fee will be charged to cover the price of lunch and materials. Mark your Calendar – First Annual Northern MN Safety Conference
In conjunction with the Minnesota Safety Council, the Northern MN Safety Council is hosting the first annual Northern MN Safety Conference on April 5 at Concordia Language Villages Spanish Village.  The conference will feature several speakers and break out sessions from private consultants and MN OSHA Consultation.  One speaker will be Mr. Garry Kroft, Senior Safety Specialist at S & N Consulting, Ltd. In Maple Grove, MN.  Kroft will present, “So You're the Safety Director...Now What?”.  Watch the CRI News for more information and registration.

Natural Resources Professionals - “Ojibwe Naming of Wild Plants”
Presenting will be Michael Wassegijig Price, a full-time science faculty member at Leech Lake Tribal College, Cass Lake, and project director of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM). He teaches ethno biology, botany and ecology.
His presentation will focus on the systematic naming of wild plants by the Ojibwe people in accordance with their language and cultural beliefs.This program is part of an ongoing series of presentations offered monthly on a variety of natural resources related topics.  Join us at the Center for Research and Innovation on February 20, from 3:00 to 4:00pm. News from the Small Business Development Center

Susan Hoosier Named Director of the NW MN Small Business Development Center
Located in the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, the SBDC serves businesses and prospective business owners in a twelve-county service area in Northwestern Minnesota.  Hoosier most recently served as the business development and loan specialist with the Headwaters Regional Development Commission in Bemidji.  Her experience includes serving a variety of capacities in within agencies supporting business development as well as in businesses, nonprofit organizations, education, and the real estate profession. Attention all Budding Entrepreneurs
The SBDC is co-sponsoring, with The People's Connection, an Entrepreneur 101 training on Tuesday, February 14th at 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Small Business Development Center.  Call 755-4255 to register for the class.  The fee is $25.00 per person.  

Coming Soon to CRI
Become a licensed insurance representative in Minnesota!  The insurance pre-licensing training gives you the knowledge and skills needed to pass the state licensing exam. This series of programs will be offered on the BSU campus via ITV beginning in March.

Learn to be a more effective public speaker!  Whether presenting to 1 or 1000, it takes mental, visual, vocal and verbal preparedness to be the best you can be.  This program will help you learn simple and reliable techniques you can use to be a better public speaker, trainer, presenter, spokesperson or lecturer. Real Estate Refresher Couse  This course will cover agency, contracts, and fair housing.  Other topics to be covered are required paper work for the Real Estate agent, legal names, tenants, earnest money and escrow items.
