Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Awards
Funding to Center for Research and Innovation
Potlatch Lumber Mill is one of the country’s oldest major forest
products companies located in Bemidji,
Minnesota. The company’s recent
separation from the larger corporation has resulted in the need to align
technology, coordinate operation and maintenance activities and efficiently
utilize equipment and computer systems. Training for 90 current employees
will be developed through a partnership with Bemidji State
University and include
access to a portable hydraulics cell simulator. Vendor training will be taped
for future training of employees via DVD and the Internet. Project results
include improved information management flow, reduced equipment down time,
and increased business success and economic contribution.
Wells Technology is a provider of precision metal machining in Bemidji, MN
near the Red Lake Reservation. The unemployment rate in this area is high
with few employment options on and around the reservation and lack of
technical training. This grant will help to establish a new industrial
training program called New Horizons, providing knowledge and experience in
precision machining. Six selected trainees will progress through a 40 hour
per week, one year training program that includes multi-media productions
paired with on-the-job training with assigned mentors. During training,
students receive wages, based on test scores. Upon course completion, they
receive a certificate and the opportunity for a rewarding career as Wells
plans to hire six new employees and several other organizations have
expressed interest in the graduates.
“Endangered Species Law and Management”
Presenting will be Janet Boe, a regional plant
ecologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This
program is part of an ongoing series of presentations offered monthly on a
variety of natural resources related topics.

from 3:00 to 4:00pm. The full
schedule of upcoming events is online.
These monthly programs are offered FREE and open to the public.
Avoid Being Part of the Workplace
Injury Statistic
Michael
Krieger, safety consultant principal with Workplace Safety Consultation, will
present “Machining and Machine Guarding” from 11:30am-1pm on December 21 at the Center for
Research and Innovation. “Roughly half
of Minnesota’s
fatalities that are investigated by MNOSHA are a result from either a lack of
machine guarding or utilization of lockout/Tagout,
or both,” said Krieger. The information included is useful to anyone who has
assigned duties relating to machine guarding which can range from a factory
safety director who’s directly responsible for machine guarding to a safety
committee member of a school where large mixers and garbage disposal may not
be adequately guarded. A
$20 fee will be charged to cover the price of lunch and materials. Advance
registration is encouraged in order to guarantee lunch. Click here for registration
