” Past, Present, and Future management of walleye on the Red Lake Reservation ”
“ This is likely one of the largest fish recovery success stories in the United States,” said Pat Brown, a fisheries biologist with the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.. “The sacrifices of all the people surrounding the Red Lakes for the past nine years will be rewarded when the walleye fishery reopens for harvest in the spring of 2006.” Anyone interested in walleye, commercial fishing, history of the area or partnerships in natural resource management will likely gain valuable insights from this presentation. Dr. Jerry Franklin to Present Ecological Forestry Lecture in Grand Rapids
Lecture by Dr. Jerry Franklin on principles of natural disturbance and stand development for application in silviculture will be presented on Thursday, September 8 from 9am to 12noon at the Sawmill Inn in Grand Rapids, MN. Franklin’s lecture will be followed by a responder’s panel of experts featuring Dr. Eric Zenner ( University of Minnesota), Ms. Cheryl Adams (UPM-Kymmene), Dr. John Almendinger (MN DNR) and Mr. Gary Swanson (USDA Forest Service, Chippewa National Forest) Registration for this workshop is available here.

Are your OSHA Visits a Positive Experience?
John M. O’Brien, a senior industrial hygienist with the Duluth office of Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration Workplace Consultation, will discuss how to “Prepare for and Manage OSHA Inspections” on August 17, from 11:30am to 1:00pm at the Center for Research and Innovation.

O’Brien will explain how to prepare for a possible OSHA inspection, how to deal with an inspector during the on-site inspection, what to do if citations or proposed fines are received and how to turn an inspection into a positive experience. A $20 fee will be charged to cover the price of materials and lunch. Winning Ticket will Develop Efficiency and Quality in your Workplace
Purchase “Season Tickets” to reserve your company’s seats at in The Winning Ticket Training Series. One “Season Ticket” reserves a seat in each of the nine training sessions. This allows your company the opportunity to select your appropriate team member to benefit from the training topics. People within the organization that you would like to develop as potential leaders within your organization or people within the organization needing CEU’s should plan to attend. Topics include value stream mapping, communication, conflict resolution, tools of quality, lean office, teambuilding, customer profiling and more. The series will begin September 8. Online Professional Development Certificate in Human Resources Begins September 6
The Center for Research and Innovation will offer their on-line professional development non-credit certificate in Human Resources Management beginning September 6. The 12-week course is designed for professionals who are new to the human resources field or human resources assistants and staff who provide technical or administrative support. The interactive design of the program will help participants build a network of resources and people that will last long after the course is completed. Vern Treat Appointed as Interim Director of Custom College Programs
Mr. Vern Treat, former Provost at Northwest Technical College, has been appointed Interim Director of Custom College Programs at Northwest Technical College.

This move supports NTC’s continued commitment to serving the businesses and industries in the region with “customized” training opportunities. To further strengthen the service to customers, customized training and educational opportunities will be provided through an integrated Custom College model that leverages the capacities of Northwest Technical College, its Center for Extended Learning and Bemidji State University’s Center for Research and Innovation. Starting a Business? Attend Entrepreneur 101!
Entrepreneur 101 is a “jam packed” 2-hour exploration of the basic steps to starting a business in the State of Minnesota and connections to resources to start the planning process. This interactive class covers idea feasibility, business plan basics, basic legal requirements, and personal decision-making (credit, lifestyles, aptitude, etc.) The next class is scheduled for Tuesday August 9 th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Center for Research and Innovation.
